How Ready Are Students For Live Learning Online?

The educational field has changed in the past few decades. Online methods of learning have replaced traditional classroom-based classes. They combine the flexibility of prerecorded lessons with class meetings that are held using real-time software. Even these online methods might not be sufficient for students who prefer classrooms with real-time interaction.

Live online learning is an alternative strategy to other online education strategies. It allows students and instructors to communicate in real-time using videoconferencing programs like Zoom. These classes let students ask questions, clarify confusion and increase their understanding of the content.

While there are many advantages for live learning however, it can be difficult for some students to adapt to this type of online learning. This study analyzes the student's ability to learn online and identifies the most important factors that affect this. The findings reveal that motivation to learn as well as self-directed communication are the most important influencing factors. The researchers also conducted a multi-group analysis as well as a post hoc tests to examine the differences between gender, undergraduate, graduate and sub-degree students. It was discovered that postgraduate students have higher readiness in most aspects of live learning compared to undergraduate and sub-degree students.

To ensure that students are prepared for the Live Session it is suggested that instructors outline clear expectations of what they must know and do before and after the session. This includes providing additional resources such as summary, gist quizzes outlines, concept maps and study guides. Instructors can also create activities to reinforce what students have learned like reviewing, practicing debating, analyzing, and discussing.
